Fishing the Lake

For most part the lake lends itself well to traditional Loch style fishing, especially targeting the native wild brown trout when drifting from a boat.

It is recommended that a 9ft or 10ft 6wt fly rod set up with a floating fly line is ideal, but also intermediate, slow and fast sinking lines should be considered throughout the season.

Bear in mind that you’ll often be fishing in a stiff breeze and a heavier line will help you get your flies out and the extra length a 10ft rod helps you to control the flies from a drifting boat that little bit better.

A 9-12ft leader of 5lb fluorocarbon and a three-fly cast, flies spaced 3ft apart with the bushiest fly on the top dropper is the norm.

Small black and spidery-looking will usually do the trick. Traditional patterns such as the Bibio, Black Pennell and Zulu should not be forgotten.

Modern techniques also work well for both the stocked rainbows and wild brownies and

start of the season nymphs such as Diawl Bachs, PTN,Hares Ears and Montana's will account for most fish.

Lures such as Blobs, Cats Whiskers,Humongous and Dancers are all catchers on their day and work extremely well.

During the warmer months, evening rises can be phenomenal and in this case,  Chronomids (buzzers) hatching as well as hawthorns, sedges etc the dry fly would be first choice.

It’s a wonderful way to fish drifting around the lake on a boat, and the fish certainly give a good account for themselves.

Bank anglers can enjoy plenty of areas to roam and not feel overcrowded. Some areas are no fishing, but for the most part a walk around the entire length of the lake is possible.

The heaviest fish of last season was taken off the bank!

Please remember the Association does not hire tackle, nor does it supply electric engines or batteries and you are required to wear buoyancy aids while in a boat at all times.
